Luxembourg

Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in the world. With the free public transport. you can visit all the prominent places in one day. It's crazy. The people speak Luxembourgish, English, French and Dutch and also German.

The wines and cheeses are different and it is more expensive as compared to France. I loved my visit here because I tried couchsurfing for the first time. For those who do not know, this is an online community where you can stay and host people, no money involved. It was such a wonderful experience that I am sure to try it again in the future.

Street lanterns in Luxembourg city

These add up to the beauty of the simple and vibrant roads. It is wonderful to take a look up and see these when we are walking through a road.

Elevators for a level change

Luxembourg city has 2 levels and there are elevators available to go to the upper level, free of cost. It is wonderful to take in the views from the panoramic elevators and stand on the glass. It feels like you're flying.

Monument of Dicks and Lentz

This monument pays homage to 2 late national poets who wrote the Luxembourgish national anthem. It is wonderfully carved and pulchritudinous to look at.

Boishin memorial

This structure is a reminder of the war. It is nice and high and beautifully placed.

Grand-Ducal Palace

It used to be a town hall earlier and was later home to the Ducal family. After the town was destroyed, this place was rebuilt. There are tourist visits that can take us inside in the summer.

J.P Foundation

This is a really wonderful building and the architecture is mind blowing. I walked in thinking it was a museum but can you believe it was an old age home?

Doves of Peace

This structure is on the upper level of the city and the view from the ledge next to it is just, wow. Its worth sitting here with a book and relaxing when the weather is nice.

Notre Dame Cathedral

This is the only cathedral in Luxembourg. It is a good central point. The monument itself is not much to bat an eye but it is the easy access point for buses and the elevators.

Golden Lady monument of remembrance

This is also another war memorial structure in the city centre, right next to the cathedral. It also has a lot of places for eating near it and some tourist souvenir shops.

Amusement rides

In the busy market streets, there are also many small joyride settlements, mostly for kids. I don't know if this is permanent but it is nice to look at.

Schengen

In this minuscule village on the 14th of June 1985, history was made by the signing of the Schengen treaty through which which Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands agreed to gradually remove controls at their internal borders. The signing was done on a boat, in the river Moselle. These countries meet in the river. My host accompanied me till here and showed me around.

The Schengen EU Museum

I saw a lot of important information about the different treaties that were signed historically and also the original accords for the European Union.

Love locks

There are many couples who, to commemorate their undying love, have written their names on these locks and locked them up. Some of these were as old as 1980s. It was super cool to see.

The peacemaking handshake

This monument is just outside the museum of EU which signifies amicable and good relations between the countries of the world.

Mullerthal Trail and the Waterfall

Oh what a beautiful, remarkable and green trail and a wonderful waterfall. This is another area to definitely visit in the country! My host and I took a relatively less travelled trail and saw so many amazing things. We had a very successful hike.

Aditi's recommendations

  1. Do the whole country, stay for two days if you must.
  2. Public transport if completely free. Take good advantage of that while visiting
  3. Try to avoid eating outside as it is a little expensive.
  4. Walk, walk walk!
Thank you for reading. Writing it was a pleasure.
Until next time!

  2. The city becomes a vibrant story through your words. Anyone can write what to see in a city, some write how to see, but you, you describe how the city feels and the best way to get lost in it. Thanks for your insights, I will come back to read this piece when I'm in Krakow next time.
