Eindhoven, Netherlands

Eindhoven is a non-touristy relatively unexplored place in the Netherlands. That is what makes it cool. It is the birthplace of Van Gogh. It is also well connected to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels and Luxembourg. It is renowned for its technology and culture alike. There's a little something for everyone, all kinds of people. I spent about 2 days exploring the city, mainly on foot. There were some really incredible things to see.

St Peter's Church

In the 1800's a hurricane had destroyed the church. It had to be rebuilt and the process of it's rebuilding is marked inside the church with it's details. Inside, we also see a number of architectural findings like skulls and bones of the victims of the plague and necklaces, toys and objects used in ancient times. I found that section of the church to be pertinent and interesting because it is not something we see very often.

The Blob

Or in dutch, "de blob". Firstly, may I just say, what a cute name! It's a blob. It serves as a shopping centre and it is so cute. There are a lot of places to eat that we can see around it.

Caged Freedom Memorial

This monument apparently signifies the freedom that every human being earns for. It is a tiny monument that you will barely be able to see. You can skip this one.

Van Abbe Museum

I'm sorry to say this but this museum of contemporary art is a joke. There is art that is "scratch and sniff". There are paintings that can only be described as children's drawings and what's worse, as a way to "take accountability" this museum broadcasts on it's ground floor how the man after whom the museum is named was a prosperous slave trader.
The photos of his slaves are put up, weak and weary. This is the worst neoliberal nonsense I have ever seen.
Classic, the people who have never had tragedy in life, exploiting that of the slaves who have no idea their lives are being used in this context. DISGUSTING. Turning other people's pain into your art is some privileged and blinded by it shit.
And plus, you pay 16 Euros for this nonsense. I bet the slaves or their progenies don't get a cent of the money they continue to make off their backs. CRUEL. SHAME.

Augustinian Church

This is a very pretty church. I had my lunch sandwich in front of this place. When I went, however, it was closed. So, I did not get the opportunity to venture in and see.

Flying Pins

This is a pretty cool structure. When you get out of the bus on the bus stop, this is right next to that. They call this art. I'll leave it at that.

Aditi's recommendations

  • Eindhoven is one of the most cycle-able places I have seen. Most of the habitants use cycles and there are well made tracks. Borrow a cycle, there are many available for cheap rentals, I think 10 euros.
  • Do NOT forget to check-in and check-out with your debit card when using the bus. It's a different system where you have to put in the card 2 times.
  • Eat stroopwaffles every chance you get.
Thank you for reading! Until next time!

  2. L'art contemporain, fait souvent cet effet décevant. Par contre c'est toujours incroyable de voir des photographies d'églises. Leurs construction est juste incroyable.
Pouvoir les voir à travers différents pays est très enrichissant.
